Ministry of Communications and IT proposes formation of the National Electronics Mission

August 04, 2014

The Ministry of Communications and IT has proposed setting up of a National Electronics Mission for creating a mechanism to implement various programmes laid down in National Policy of Electronics (NPE).  The National Electronics Mission is proposed to be set up with industry participation.  The mission will design programmes as well as create an institutional mechanism to advance the implementation of these programmes to accomplish the aims laid down under the NPE.

Under the policy, the government has set objective of developing an ecosystem for a globally competitive electronic system and design and manufacturing sector in the country.  This sector is expected to achieve a turnover of about $400 billion by 2020, involving investment of about $100 billion and employment to around 28 million people at various levels.

Earlier in 2011, the ministry had come up with a proposal, with the objective of approving the National Electronics Mission and for creating a two tier structure, comprising of National Electronics Advisory Board and National Electronics Commission. The mechanism was expected to act as a single-window to formulate policies. Along with this, a suitable delegation of powers was also proposed under this structure.  However, the proposal was not approved by the Department of Expenditure and the Planning Commission.
